Free Will Killed Jesus Christ
- Believers in Sovereign Grace are often accused of believing that man doesn’t have freewill.
This is simply false (though it’s true of some Calvinists).
Man does have free will to make choices in his life.
2Sa 24:12 – Go and say unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; CHOOSE thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.
Pro 3:31 – Envy thou not the oppressor, and CHOOSE none of his ways.
- But fallen man doesn’t have the ability to choose to make himself righteous and choose to receive eternal life.
This is because fallen man is spiritually dead.
Eph 2:1 – And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Dead men don’t do anything and spiritually dead men don’t do anything spiritual.
***Dead man in the river analogy***
Fallen man WILL NOT and CANNOT seek after God.
Psa 10:4 – The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.
Rom 3:10 – As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
Rom 3:11 – There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
Rom 3:12 – They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
Fallen man is free from righteousness, not free to it.
Rom 6:20 – For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
Therefore, the salvation of fallen man is NOT ACCORDING TO HIS WILL.
Rom 9:16 – So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
III. Fallen man will choose to reject Jesus Christ if he is offered the chance to receive Him.
Mar 15:9 – But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
Mar 15:10 – For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy.
Mar 15:11 – But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them.
Mar 15:12 – And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?
Mar 15:13 – And they cried out again, Crucify him.
Mar 15:14 – Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.
Luk 23:25 – And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.
Fallen man’s free will nailed Jesus to the cross and fallen man’s free will is no different today.
- The salvation of the elect is according to God’s will, not their will.
Eph 1:4 – According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
Eph 1:5 – Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
Eph 1:11 – In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
- Once an elect child of God has been regenerated and given eternal life, then, and only then, can he choose to seek and follow God.
Eph 1:13 – In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, (verse 13 comes after verses 4-11)
1Th 1:4 – Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.
1Th 1:5 – For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.
1Th 1:6 – And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost:
