How is Jesus Elect?
- “Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.” (1Pe 2:6)
- How is Jesus elect?
Jesus is not elect in the sense of being chosen to be saved since He was sinless and had no need of salvation (2Co 5:21).
He must therefore be elect in another sense.
III. Elect primarily means chosen.
Elect adj. – 1. Picked out, chosen; also, chosen for excellence or by preference; select, choice. Also absol. a person or persons chosen.
Mar 13:20 – And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect’s sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.
- Jesus is God’s chosen Messiah or Christ, whom He chose to save His people from their sins.
Luk 23:35 – And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.
Isa 42:1 – Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.
Mat 12:18 – Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.
1Pe 2:4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
Mat 1:21 – And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
- The firstborn are God’s chosen.
Num 3:13 – Because all the firstborn are mine; for on the day that I smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto me all the firstborn in Israel, both man and beast: mine shall they be: I am the LORD.
- Jesus is God’s firstborn.
Col 1:15 – Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
Col 1:18 – And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
Jesus, as the firstborn, was God’s chosen — His elect.
VII. God’s elect children are chosen and represented in Jesus, God’s chosen Christ.
Eph 1:4 – According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
Gal 3:29 – And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
Rom 8:1 – There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
