The Trinity

  1. Bible declares that God is a trinity, or a triune God, consisting of the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost.

1Jn 5:7 – For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

These are not three offices of God, but rather three persons which each bear record (Joh 8:14-18 c/w 1Jo 5:7).

Joh 8:14 – Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true…

Joh 8:17 – It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.

Joh 8:18 – I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.

Record – I. 1. Law.  a. The fact or attribute of being, or of having been, committed to writing as authentic evidence of a matter having legal importance, spec. as evidence of the proceedings or verdict of a court of justice; evidence which is thus preserved, and may be appealed to in case of dispute.

Witness – 1. Knowledge, understanding, wisdom. Obs. (not used after 1482).  2. a. Attestation of a fact, event, or statement; testimony, evidence; †evidence given in a court of justice.

The Trinity is shown plainly in the Old Testament as well.

Isa 48:16 – Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord GOD, and his Spirit, hath sent me.

  1. All three persons of the Trinity are declared to be God in the scripture.

The Father is God (2Th 2:16).

The Word, the Lord Jesus Christ, is God.

Joh 1:1 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Joh 1:2 – The same was in the beginning with God.

Joh 1:3 – All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Joh 1:14 – And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

1Ti 3:16 – And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

            The Holy Ghost is God.

Act 5:3 – But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?

Act 5:4 – Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

III.   A trinity is not an incomprehensible idea.

The universe is a trinity made of matter, space, and time.

The universe can’t exist without all three elements.

Matter can’t move without space and as it moves, time occurs.

Space is a trinity made of length, width, and height.

Space can’t exist without all three.

Yet, length is not width and width is not height.

One couldn’t really say that length is a part of space though, since length cannot be separated from space and analyzed alone.

Since there is no space without length, one could say that all of space is length; yet length is not width or height.

The same is the case with the other two dimensions.

Matter is a trinity made of energy, motion, and phenomena.

Matter is energy in motion that causes a phenomena (light, sound, etc).

Energy, motion, and phenomena are not what matter does, they are what matter is.

Time is a trinity made of past, present, and future.

They are not the same, yet if any of them are missing, there is no time.

All time was future, is, was, or will be present, and is or will be past.

Human beings are likewise trinities made of body, soul, and spirit.

1Th 5:23 – And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
