Whosoever is Born of God Doth Not Commit Sin (1Jo 3:6-9)

  1. What does the Bible mean when it says that those who are born again cannot and do not sin?

1Jn 3:6-9 – Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

1Jn 3:7 – Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

1Jn 3:8 – He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

1Jn 3:9Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

  1. A regenerate man is comprised of a fallen sinful nature (his flesh) and a renewed spiritual nature.

These  two natures war against each other within a child of God.

Gal 5:17 – For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Rom 7:22 – For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

Rom 7:23 – But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

III.   Our flesh can and does sin.

1Jn 1:8 – If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

1Jn 1:9 – If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1Jn 1:10 – If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

  1. The new spiritual man within us cannot and does not sin.

Rom 6:6 – Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

Rom 6:7 – For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Rom 7:17 – Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

Rom 7:22 – For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

1Jn 5:18 – We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

  1. This is the answer to the supposed contradiction between 1Jo 3:6-9 and 1Jo 1:8-10.
